Our Class Wiki - So Far

After a few weeks of reviewing, reading and better understanding our class wiki I have been actively looking it over I was able to use it for a project in one of my courses on YouTube. It is supper helpful and I will like to keep using and getting more comfortable with it. I would like to contribute and make our wiki page more organized and readable. It has an outline that is very old school. Modernizing it will be helpful. I also want to create a post on New Media & Business as I am going to continue my research, I'd like to post all the pros and cons of New Media with business. There is an article called "How the New Media are Used in Business"on our wiki page that I would like to add to as it is extremely in depth.
This is a helpful source especially after knowing how to use it.

P2P File Sharing

File Sharing is method of sharing transmitting files from one system or computer to another persons system or computer. As stated in an article by the NMA staff on econsultancy.com, Content producers should take advantage of P2P, not fear it, P2P it can bring big audiences or bigger audiences. File sharing is something people fear and this article states we shouldn't fear it as it can be a huge plus to new media and drawing an audience. The trouble with this is that is temporarily beneficial. It attracts an audience rapidly but eventually dies out. P2P file sharing is exactly what this article describes. P2P file sharing allows users to share books online, movies and games. Many see this as sharing and not dangerous.. On npr.org, there is an article by Wendy Kaufman called Peers find less pressure borrowing from each other, describing this method of sharing important data and beneficial data. I have never heard of P2P and can see why some companies or industries are not fond of it. Some examples of p2p sharing are BitTorrentt in which is very popular and Tribler.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Privacy & Confidentiality are a huge part of New Media today. In the beginning of new media venturing out to society, many people were extremely hesitant in using because of privacy and confidentiality. It is quite obvious that when someones information is searched on google, many times there social media page pops up if all credentials match. Such as email, instagram @ name, phone number, etc. The coolest thing for many when it comes to social media is the opportunity to search for someone you know and instantly be connected. From childhood friends to family members, this has been a huge positive with new media. However, the scary part of  this is how easy it is to find someone. One can retrieve an individuals work place, address, age and so forth all through looking at his/her page. Things like this have led to major cases of harassment. With that being said, there is not one social media account or new media account that does not have a privacy setting in which allows you to adjust what you would like for one to see or not see.
The concern that lies with this is this really a privacy setting and how many people are able to suppress that. Which is many with hacking and what not. These are all concerns many have with how updated new media is and how easy it has made it to be found on the internet.
With today's new media, everything is accessible online and created online. People put in SSC #'s, credit/debit card numbers and other very personal things online. This is the norm. The fear with privacy and confidentiality is who is seeing this and how many people are able to hack and get our information. So many companies, MAJOR companies, have been affected by this. Target being one of them where every single customer from a certain period of time were violated with hackers who got a hold of every card information. These are things that occur and will continue to occur as technology improves. I am sure in time technology will create greater barriers, however, in the time being, ensuring you are using secured websites and being careful with what exactly is put up is what new media users have to do.

Advice

New Media has become more and more a part of our environment and is rapidly growing.
Baruch College is very up to date with new media in the sense of creating an environment that is modernized. As a student, I can always count on finding a MacBook or camera to do my homework and keep up with the changes in media.
Baruch being a business school it is important to keep the students up to date with new media and technology as our future jobs consist of this.
I would incorporate some more classes that truly teach more on of the new media and digital side.
A course like CIS 3810 truly challenges ones technology skills and I strongly believe we need more of that. This may need to start with a course in class where one is taught the ins and outs of our Ethernet and ways to incorporate it with what we are learning.
I find social media to be a big jump for education. However, Twitter has been a huge part of two classes I have taken and I think it would be great to continue to have it. I would add a twitter hotline where one can get tutored, mentored and assisted on twitter.
Baruch can have a twitter hotline.
I think this is all about new media but is truly helpful to students who need assistance with certain areas. This can help improve learning and make the learning process fun. Many students can see it and it can be a platform. I would think eventually a hotline per course can then be created and separated by hashtags.
This is a great project to have. It can also be used as an internship where students can be tutor "certified" and be one of the people to control the twitter hotlines. This way it is not hurting Baruch's budget but it is an opportunity for an internship for students and can have tutoring accessible at all times.
